Born Björk Guðmundsdóttir, on Nov 21, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Reportedly 5' 4".

The goofy pop queen from Iceland (whose exotic look quite frankly seems more Eurasian than nordic), she's the focus of a sprawling empire of worship sites that have organized themselves into a web ring where her carefully manicured image, ranging from kooky-cute to kooky-weird, can be found in abundance. Now I should say that, while I'm a fan of a lot of her music, I can admit that a good deal of it is pretty silly, cornballish stuff, and I suspect that her foreignness is what grants her the leeway to pull it off. (I doubt very many people in this country would accept that sort of music from an American band, but it's cute when Björk does it. Ramstein's brief popularity had the same thing going for it — it's over-the-top 80s-retro-sounding industrial music and snarling would have been laughed off the stage if it were in English, but it's fun and kitschy in German.) Sadly, for all her talent and contributions to the music industry, none of this will matter ten years from now. Or maybe even five. Let's face it: if anyone in this country remembers her at all, it'll be for her kooky look and image, not for her kooky music, which, since it doesn't get much air time on radio or TV, will never be known to more than a handful of diehard fans and goofballs like me.

Also sprach Golem.
