Born on Aug 29, 1971 in Sarasota, Florida, USA. Reportedly 5' 5", 35-25-35.

TV star vehicles — that is, shows created specifically to promote a particular star and usually to feed off his or her celebrity in return — are a lot like typical James Bond vehicles in that they're not only tailor-made to serve the needs of their celebrity drivers, but often jealously protective of them as well — so much so that anyone else attempting to take the wheel might find themselves hurtling through the air in an ejection seat. The Q-designed Baywatch was such a vehicle: whenever its bikini-clad de facto stars demanded more money for their contributions to the show's ratings, they either learned to accept that their stardom was illusory and that David Hasselhoff was the show's only true star, or they found themselves suddenly “free to pursue other creative interests”. This kind of ejection from moving vehicles has been the fate no small number of supporting stars, and as might be expected, few of them ever manage to land on their feet.

Child-faced but Playmate-bodied Carla Gugino might show herself to be an exception. A minor model and actress, Carla finally got her big break when she managed to land a role in the Michael J. Fox vehicle Spin City (she played Fox's girlfriend), a break that proved to be short-lived: amid rumors that she was fast becoming as popular as Fox himself and that his wife was none too happy about the chemistry between him and his top-heavy co-star, Carla was booted off the show after only twelve episodes. But while little commercial success has come her way since (unless you count her recent L'Oreal ads), she's likelier to do better than, say, Baywatch ejectee Yasmine Bleeth, since Carla proved herself to be a potential a ratings cow while (inadvertently) not being typecast or permanently associated with any particular show — which means that, while she may or may not be getting many script offers, she'll probably get offered a wider range of roles, and thereby possibly get one that doesn't go straight to video or late-night cable.

Granted, this is probably more wishful thinking than a sober take on a career that had the rug yanked out from under it; realistically, I suspect that if she doesn't find a good role by the time her L'Oreal contract is up, she'll go into semi-retirement, start a family, and then withdraw from the Hollywood pantheon altogether, bitterly recalling her brief shot at immortality whenever another parent recognizes her at her kid's soccer match and asks, “Didn't you used to be on that sitcom with that guy with the shaky hands...?” And since she never really got the chance to become famous enough to have a cult following that would remember her a few decades later, she probably won't be able to employ the Shannon Tweed strategy for middle-aged actresses and star in endless softcore cable movies to help make ends meet when the modest income from her earlier work dries up. Of course, like any fan, I hope such a fate never befalls her ... even though deep down I think we all know it will.

Also sprach Golem.

Carla Off the Air ... Again

When Karen Sisco was pulled off the air not too long ago, critics mourned its passing and chastised the public for its mediocre tastes; now Threshold is being canceled and not even the critics care.... Read more

Sin City

Thursday, April 21, 2005
It’s Don Quixote meets Pulp Fiction: Three (or so) interweaving and ultra-violent tales of a directionless, burnt-out thug on parole, a directionless, burnt-out cop on the verge of retirement, and a directionless, burnt-out death row escapee who independently seek redemption and meaning by avenging or protecting the fallen women who for a fleeting moment made their lives worthwhile. Stylishly adapted with gory exuberance by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino from the stylishly bloody graphic novels of Frank Miller.... Read more

Carla to Be in Film Adaptation of Sin City

Friday, September 10, 2004
I’m not at all familiar with Frank Miller’s Sin City comic (or graphic novel, or whatever) and so have no idea what to expect from the upcoming movie, but whether or not it’s anywhere as good as, say, Miller’s Elektra Assassin (with which I am familiar) hardly matters as far as Carla Gugino fans are concerned, as it’ll be the first film she takes her top off in since 1998. About time, too, now that the Spy Kids thing has pretty much dried up.... Read more
